Hey Joe.

A while back to mentioned that you would like to Bring back the Ultraverse in a Big way but Couldn't. Any way you could share What you were Thinking about and Why you couldn't do it? I just downloaded the Entire Ultraverse Run off the net because I didn't want to go digging though my long boxes for them and Remembered how much I loved the Ultraverse and their chars, And now that the last time anyone saw them they were running around the 616 Uni, I would KILL to get a Guest shot by chars like Atom bob or Mantra.

(Since the post immediately after me was the first one to receive an answer in one JF, I'm going to repeat myself in the hopes I'll get lucky.)

1. Like me, a lot of fans don't want to see Mark Bagley's work in black and white but in glorious colour, so instead of an Essential Thunderbolts, will we ever see either a Thunderbolts Masterworks or a Thunderbolts hardcover?

2. Follow-up question to that: will some of the secrecy remain to surprise new readers?

When will we see something with Hawkeye playing a major role, written by someone who doesn't think the character is so suicidal that he would kill himself because his freaking quiver is on fire?

Edited to ask what I meant to ask, instead of the exact opposite.

how about some Essential-esque CD ROMs... but maybe without the ads?

Oeming is writing Ares and did an awesome job of finishing Thor and bringing Beta Ray Bill to earth... isnt he the obvious choice for bringing back thor?

Also when will we see Bill again... you gave him a snazzy costume and dumped him in New York... you could at least have him join the avengers!

with sentry back is there a chance of seeing other less mainstream bt cool characters show up? eg- Marvel Boy or The Hood... i mean both those series were set up for sequels!

As I am sure you are aware there seems to be a cult of Deadpool follower out there. When will we get to see out Essential Deadpool book(s)?
Will Deadpool get one of those Spider-Man other covers (since well they look alike...)?
How about hiring the guys at Yearone.Spiderspawn to do a cover too damnit!

Will Marvel ever do another Western series? Blaze of Glory: The Last Ride of The Western Heroes was an excellent series. On a relateed note what is Leonardo Manco doing? Is he still at Marvel and if not will he be back?

Dear Joe;

Let me preface my comments by saying that I am a third generation Marvel Comics reader/collector, (Grandfather, Father, me (1950's to the present). I used to collect 25 Marvel titles a month & spend nearly $30 to $40 a month. Those 2 have significantly been reduced to the Ultimate Line (5 Books a month) & $14.00 a month. I have watched the complete & utter destruction of the Marvel Universe over the last 5+ years to the point that it is unreadable. I have tried to be a loyal reader, but House of M & The Other has pushed me away from the Marvel Universe. I have two children at that age where they are starting to read/collect comic books & they want nothing to do with Marvel. They love the movies & cartoons but they hate the way you guys have portrayed the characters in the comics. And they read only the DC Universe, which by far has been the better monthly reads over the last 3+ years. So I ask you not as the EIC of Marvel but fan to fan can you give me 3 reasons to become a full fledged Marvel Zombie again & continue my family tradition. I would like to thank you for your time & have a pleasant day.

Sincerely Yours;

Anthony

Hola Joe!
First of all, I want to say that I reaaaaally love "The Santerians". A mexican myself, I just want to say thanks for create a latinamerican group of cool-strange heroes in the Marvel Universe...

Now with the questions...

1) Are there any chance of see the Santerians in a Marvel Knights mini-series or something?

2) What´s the odds to have non native english speakers (spanish writers/novelists for instance) writing Marvel Books?

3) Any chance to have dramatists (playwrights) writing comics in addition to novelists and screenwriters?

Muchas gracias Joe!

Why does Marvel not state whether an issue is the final issue of a series? Not notifying readers that a title has been canceled only leads to rumours and speculation.

Hey,

I see that the What If? titles are coming back. I remember from last year they had some crazy good ideas and this year looks the same but will What Ifs? ever get a sequel? Or will they have instead of a one-shot, they would have a mini. Because alot of times I'm more interested in this twisted story like the Thing being Dr.Doom and hope to see it continue.

As someone who has submitted ideas to you before, I was wondering exactly what it takes for Marvel to read the work of unpublished authors. I would think new writers would be valuable with your self-stated policy of constantly rotating creative teams. And on a side note, the fact that you personally sign replies, even if they are declining to read the work, is appreciated. Very classy.

NRAMA: Is Death's Head 3.0 part of a larger plan to bring back and revive the Marvel UK properties?

Can we expect to see Motormouth, Killpower, Black Axe, Dark Angel, Super Soldiers, Gene Dogs, or Genetix again?

i've seen a lot of talk about claremont on these boards, and the two things that always come up are the artist changes affecting his quality of story, and his having to work inside of editorial demands. any chance of chris getting a book outside of continuity where he could do what he had originally planned with the characters alongside a consistent (maybe mark bagley) type artistic talent?

Hi Joe,

I spoke to artist Chris Sprouse at a convention recently and he mentioned that now that Tom Strong is ending he'd be interested in potentially doing some Marvel Comics work. Spider-Man or Fantastic Four in particular.

So what do you say, Joe? Give this guy some work!

Hey Joe Q.

I recently enjoyed the hell out of the recent Spider-Man Family one-shot, and was wondering if perhaps we might see an ongoing Spider-Man Family anthology series?

I think it would be a great way to check in on some of the minor supporting characters in Spideys's cast along with the other similar themed heroes in the Marvel Universe.

C'mon I can't be the only one who's wondering what Julia Carpenter is up to these days. Can I?

I wanted to thank Joe Q and Newsarama for providing this platform for questions to be answered.

Here's this week's batch of queries:-

1. Love the fact that Marvel has taken the trouble to continue the letters page tradition in many of the titles. Can we see this in other titles like Amazing Spider-Man and Daredevil? Or do they not receive enough letters to justify a monthly column?

2. Just read Strange: Beginnings and Endings. Is this going to be the default origin of Dr Strange from hereon? Any chance of seeing a regular monthly Dr Strange title? Preferably by Roger Stern and Chris Sprouse or Paul Smith would be great.

3. What in your opinion makes a good comic book story? Is the "arc" driven stories of recent years something you see continuing or will we see more done-in-one stories in your mainstream titles (i dont mean your younger reader Adventures line). I miss the days where you dont need 6 issues to complete a story.

4. I live in Singapore. Will you ever make a trip here? Neil Gaiman had a great time when he was here two months ago!

Hi Joe,

I don't want to complain about the fact that some books are late - that's just part of the comics business. What I would like to take you and your website team up on is that the "Marvel Catalog" section of your website is rarely updated when books miss their original shipping date.

In particular, this happened when I went to get Ultimates #9 a couple of weeks ago from my store, after looking on your website that it would be in stores, and then being sorely disappointed when I left empty-handed.

As someone who does not have Diamond's site on their favourites list, please could you ensure that your own catalog is an accurate reflection of changed shipping dates? Your site is no doubt the first (and surely, definitive) source to ordinary readers as to when your products will be out in stores.

Thanks - I hope you keep up the great story work at Marvel, all the best to you and yours.

Mr. Quesada,

Some variant covers are offered under the criteria that they exist in a limited number defined by a ratio comparing it to the regular cover of said issue. This would seem to have a direct relationship with the price of said variant cover.

I don't have a problem with variant cover ratios or with stores charging a higher price for them. However, I feel it is at best misleading when the publisher, in quantities far exceeding the originally publicized ratio, later offers the same limited issues.

I know this has been done on several New Avengers variants. Now I see the House of M #2 Dodson variant listed by Diamond and wonder if it is happening again. The House of M Joe Mad variant was originally stated as limited and may people bought it according to that information. By the time they found out the quantities were unlimited it was too late.

Please explain how a consumer, or a retailer for that matter, should use the variant cover ratios that are publicized if they are not a true representation of the scarcity of the variant cover in question? Do you feel it is dishonest or at least unfair to later offer the issues, previously hyped as rare, in unlimited quantities?

Thank you.

1)When you saw the F4 movie, were you happy with the way Dr. Doom was handled and if you had it your way, would you want the monarch of Latveria to be in the sequel, it seems that is what they were hinting at the end of the movie ? Also would you want him to yell Richards ?

2)Now that Latveria is a "free" nation, when will Doom return to regain his empire, his wealth, his robots, his armor, and even his own body ? Doom hasn't been seen since "Authoritative Action."

Thank you,

Chris Johnson

Hi Joe,

I know you've probably heard this question a lot but I have to ask it as I've just joined the Newsarama boards, when will Canadian cover prices finally go down? The Canadian dollar has been very strong for the past two years and it's hovering around the 20% mark ($1.00 US=$1.20 CDN) for most of the year (in fact, today it's actually $1.00 US=$1.17 CDN) and the Canadian cover price is over 50% above the US cover. I know that Image Comics has dropped their Canadian prices a bit this year so what about Marvel? Please give your Canadian neighbours a break, heck, most comics today are printed in Canada by Quebecor anyway. ;)

Q -

Is there any chance at all of seeing anymore ROM: Spaceknight comics?
Also, in the wake of Black Widow, any chance of a Sydney Bristow (of ABC's Alias) title?
Alias dvds sell well and with the series concluding soon the fans hunger will be at its maximum.

Thanks for answering fans questions here!

Why do comics no longer have page numbers? Or volume numbers? I recently organized my collection which I had not done since 1994, and it was an absolute nightmare. SPider-Man. Peter Parker: Spider-Man. The Spectacular Spider-Man. Peter Parker the Spectacular Spider-Man. Don't get me started on the Spectacular Scarlet Spider. I know that one isn't your fault though. But the Punisher followed by the Punisher followed by the Punisher. One was Marvel, then marvel Knights, then Marvel MAX. But they all had the same cover!

Hola, Senor Q! Just a few questions, handle them as you will and tapdance with your usual grace around any major spoilers. Also, thanks for moving the ads to the back of the comics.

1). Will we be seeing more of Vegas? As he is (in my own opinion) one of the most interesting and original characters to appear in a Marvel title for a long time!

2). Any news on an ongoing Ghost Rider title?

3). Given the furore that grew up the last time Marvel changed Spider-Man's costume, how long did it take for you to agree to the redesign? do you think fans in general will like it?

4). Any upcoming projects at Marvel you'd like to tease us with, or ones you in particular are excited about?

Thanking you, as ever, for your time.

Joe,
I would love to see more Essentials that reprint classic 1970s series, like:

The Champions (reprinting #1-17, plus their GS in Iron Man annual #4, a Chrsitmas story from Marvel Treasury Edition #13, and their appearance in Super-Villains Team-Up #14)

Master of Kung Fu (plus Special Marvel Editon, and the Deadly Hands of Kung Fu)

The Invaders (Cap, Bucky, Human Torch, Sub-Marnier, WWII and Roy Thomas)

Spider-Woman

Captain Marvel

Warlock (Strange Tales stories included)

I noticed that your contract has expired with graphittidesigns.com for making your shirts and was pretty bummed out because I was planning to order some. I then noticed the link to that zazzle.com place on the newsletter and I am assuming that's who will be handling your shirts. Heres my problem, all the designs are mostly art from the 60's and 70's any chance of modern designs like Bullseyes greates hits cover, or Tim Bradstreets Punisher covers, or the Daredevil "I am your God" shirt design? Also I noticed that all the available colors are pretty horrible. There's no black, no red, no navy blue, but there's colors like pink, gold, lime, and natural. WTF? It seems like your marketing to the 40+ year old crowd with those colors and designs, when you should be marketing to the teen+ crowd. Thoughts?

Joe:

1) I was big time into X-men when AoA story came out and loved the Char X-Man (Nate Grey). He had so much potential and loved what was done with him during his first 20 issues solo and the Onslaught storyline. What was the reason for killing him off? and any plans on returning him to the x-books or another AoA storyline? how about Exiles? I think he would be great addition to New Avengers, becoming a hero and learning the ropes.

2) Captain Marvel (Genis-Vell) was also a top char and book i read while it was out, but why in the world have you turned him into Photon? I loved how he was trying to live up to his fathers mantle and went nuts with all his powers. Any plans to bring him back to the spotlite where he belongs as Captain Marvel?

With these two chars back to where they belong, would bring me and a lot of my close friends into marvel books again like we used too.

Thanks

First off I am dedicated Marvel fan and I ask these questions out of love and curiosity not pettiness.

1) Nyx- As a 1000 other posters have already quoted you on, you said you always had a problem with the huge mutant population and felt it was a thorn in the X-World's side. My question isn't why did you create Nyx, it's pretty clear you had a story to tell and wanted to share it, but why did you hold on to it and let it die. Nyx #3 is the longest running Wizard top 10 book on the list now, well over a year. The first four issues sell extremely well even now. Why didn't you accept that you couldn't do the book in a timely matter and give it to another writer. It seems to me that you were sitting on a winning scratch ticket and finally cashed it in way after it expired. I just want to know the reason why it was left to fade away instead of handed over to a creative team that could keep it going. Early sales showed that this could have been the hottest new team book in years, but now it's just that series that has the first X-23.

2) I asked both you and Bendis on this forum why was Gambit on the cover to HoM 1 and Secrets of the HoM. You both said to wait and see. Well I waited and I saw nothing. He had two pages and one line of dialogue. So I ask again, why was he on the cover. I am a huge Gambit/Hawkeye fan so I was pretty scared when a New Avengers/Astonishing X book came out by Bendis and Gambit's on it. Was it just Essad Ribic adding in a character that didn't belong or were there original intentions to include him more? You had me scarred and ready to drop some X-books after seeing all that.

3) I wanted to say thank you, becuase no one else will, about how quickly and professionally you handled the Ad's problem. You accepted the blame and corrected instantly. I never had a problem with the Ad's before but it's a Huge bonus how it is now. Thanks for making comics that much better.

4) Finally, We all know Marvel is owning the box office when it comes to Comic Book movies. I mean Batman Begins was awesome but you guys are just relentless in making fanboy dreams come true. The movies have vastely helped the industry and your company with new viewers and more acceptance of comics altogether. But why does DC own you guys on the cartoon side of things. Justice League is a perfect show for kids and adults and Teen Titans are making Beast Boy and Starfire a household name. Why isn't marvel taking more steps towards taking back a piece of that pie. X-Men or Spider-man cartoons? Those are what brought me to comics as a kid.

Back in July a new Moon Knight mini-series was announced that was to be written by Charlie Huston with art by David Finch. On November 30th, a new Moon Knight wallpaper was posted on Marvel.com with the tagline "Moon Knight - A new ongoing series starting April 2006". Does this mean that the mini-series has been expanded into an ongoing, and if so will Huston and Finch be staying on the book past what was originally going to be "The Bottom"? Thanks.

We need answers please.

Alright I love New Avengers one of my favorite books.

Loved this one and can't wait for the next and I'm a big fan of Bendis.

That being said, the whole Echo being Ronin thing was just stupid to dress her up in padding.

Yeah you can say well it was to fool people so they don't make a connection, but HHAAHAHAHA this is the comicbook world how many times do people in it never make any connection.

This past issue on the cover her flesh was showing through a rip and blood was coming out, the rip in the clothing was thin no padding that I saw.

What did she need to hide from the paparazi that follow heros on there secret missons.

No it was the camaras in the building right.

Well what if the bad guys caught her held in a room and took off her mask her ID would have been blown there then so who cares if the camras saw her.

No ninja would use so much padding it would hinder there movment to much.

If Ronin is everyone then what about a guy who wants to be him are they going to make him look like a girl so nobody makes the connection?

In short Joe, Echo is Ronin dresesd like a man what the F?

Amazing Fantasy #15 was a lot of fun.

Is there any possibility that an issue like this could be combined with the web poll to have Marvel fans vote on new pitches by writers/artists for new miniseries? I'd love to be able to cast a vote for which new character I'd like to see in an miniseries or story arc of AmFam based on the short pieces in AmFam #15.

And can we ever hope to see more 2 page adventures like Blackjack sprinkled in regular Marvel titles? Cuz I for one would totally love that!!

Thanks Joe!

1. Is it really professional for you to express an extreme dislike for a character (in this case Speedball) whilst Marvel is still making money from it (the recent New Warriors mini-series and the Marvel Visionaries: Steve Ditko hardcover)?

2. Will Marvel be producing many comics that don't tie-in, cross-over, spin-out, zig-zag lead-in or loop-de-loop with the latest series of "events"? Will Runaways and She-Hulk be safe from that nonsense?

3. Will Marvel be producing any comics that aren't part of a "shared universe", aren't about super heroes and use only new characters and concepts?

Is it true that Marvel does not pay any royalties to Jack Kirby's family on reprints? I have read that after fifteen years no reprint royalties are paid to the artist family and I believe Kirby died in 1994, so that means soon no royalties would be paid to his family. - Again is this Marvel's policy?

From Joe Fridays 27:
"With Sentry back is there a chance of seeing other less mainstream but cool characters show up? e.g. - Marvel Boy or The Hood? I mean both those series were set up for sequels!

JQ: Hey Marchie, Marvel Boy hmmm? Seems like there’s a lot of “Marvel” in the wind lately. On another note, you’ll be seeing the Hood sometime soon.

1.: On his forum www.bkv.tv, Brian said that he won't be involved in the Hood project you mentioned. So here is my question:

WHY?

2.: To which editor should I send a pitch about Marvel characters that are not used right now (for instance, Hannibal King)?

3.: Why a Painkiller Jane movie, not an Ash movie? When will we see more of Ash?

Why is Marvel gouging it's Canadian readers? The Amazing Spider-Man: New Avengers trade that came out this week is priced at $14.99 US and a whopping TWENTY FOUR DOLLARS Canadian! This particular trade featured 6 issues of story. Let's compare Marvel to DC prices. Ocean by Warren Ellis also came out in trade this week and featured 6 issues of story. It too was priced at $14.99 US, but only $19.99 Canadian - four bucks cheaper than Marvel. Based on December 2nd trading figures, $14.99 US converts to only $17.43 Canadian, so what gives? Why the huge difference in Canadian pricing on Marvel books and when is this going to be corrected?

Any plans on using Ultra-Girl anytime soon? Just seems with the new Kree/Skrull war coming up and Ms Marvel getting her own book, it'd be easy to work her in there some way. She'd be a pretty cool addition to the Young Avengers especially.

A few questions:

1. One of the best new characters to come out from Marvel in recent memory was GRAVITY. Unfortunately, it had little to no marketing push. I love the character though, and especially enjoyed his presence in the Marvel Holiday Special. What are the plans for Gravity in the future, and what could we as fans do to assure he'll have a comeback? (Buy a hardcover, maybe?)

2. I loved the anthology-style AMAZING FANTASY #15. Any chance we could see more anthology type stuff, kind of like a modern-day Dark Horse (or Marvel Comics) Presents with new ideas mixed with popular ones? In that issue I particularly enjoyed Mastermind Excello and the Heartbreak Kid and would love to see them again.

3. Touching upon the most recent column. West Coast Avengers. Please? I'm asking nicely. :)

4. Will we be seeing more of the Excelsior team from Runaways soon?

5. Marvel's covers have had the same look for nearly 4 years now. Any chance some change may be coming?

6. Finally, where is the love for MARVEL TEAM-UP? Such a great book but no buzz. So, Joe, here is your forum to get people reading. (And yeah, I know Gravity is showing up - can't wait!)

Forgot to ask when I threw in my last batch of questions: What's going on with the "new" New Universe stuff? Do you think there are routes that could be taken with those characters that could make them successful, and if yes, why now?

And just wanted to throw in that I really liked the last two issues of the Hulk. Love the new logo, great artwork, great story. Well done.

Joe

first off thanks for answering my question about northstar last week, you gave me hope for one of my newest favorite characters!

now this question is about another "underdog" my question COnscerns Jessica Jones. are there any plans for her? (i didn't notice any new Pulse solicits after her pregnancy arch, so that has me worried about her) but it also seems like you guys are "testing the waters with her" she guess stared in Marvel Knights 4, and it seems like she has some role to play in Young Avengers. so any news about Jessica?

JOE! Bad Character wise I have a question:

You hate Speedball, but what about Slapstick? He could definetly be Marvel's answer to Plastic Man. He could star in a monthly title in an almost satirical nature. I've got the scripts to prove it.

What about SLAPSTICK?

1) On Millarworld, we've been discussing Essential volumes we'd like to see:

http://forums.millarworld.tv/index.php?showtopic=55578

The ones most requested:

Master Of Kung Fu
Black Panther
Sub-Mariner
Captain Marvel
Ms Marvel
more Power Man and Iron Fist
Nick Fury
Black Widow
Alpha Flight
more Defenders
Machine Man

Which ones have the strongest possibility of being published?

2)Will we be seeing more of the new Scorpion?

3)Is the Falcon solo series still on the table?

I would just like to ask Mr. Quesada why the quality of the books has been so poor here on the west coast (I don't know how it is everywhere else...). It's so difficult to find an issue that isn't messed up. This affects comic store owners too, as their customers will want cleaner copies.

Hello, Joe...

Thanks a lot for taking the time to answer these questions. Despite my complaints, I really am a huge Marvel fan of over 25 years. Books like Runaways, She-Hulk, Thing, Ultimate Spider-Man, New Avengers, and Thunderbolts are real gems. That said...

1:A LENGTHY Concern) Marvel seems to have a real problem maintaining a coherent continuity these days. I don't mean the "what issue did Giant-Man first meet Darkhawk" kind of continuity. What I mean is this: we've got the Sentry in action with the Avengers in House of M #1 BEFORE his comeback storyline in New Avengers had even started. You've got characters running around saying that something is wrong with S.H.I.E.L.D. and Nick Fury, but we don't know what because Secret War #5 is so late that its timeline had to be adjusted to fit with changes to the Marvel Universe. You've got the Black Panther/X-Men storyline referring to events from Black Panther #1-6 (which was supposed to be a "Year One") as though they had JUST HAPPENED. We had a softer, cuddlier Magneto back in Excalibur, just after the genocidal one was beheaded by Wolverine, with no real explanation (a very vague "wandadidit?" offering in House of M doesn't really cut it).

Now you say that stories have been building up to next year's Illuminati event for "some time now," and that it ties in to Avengers: Disassembled and the post-House of M universe. This just doesn't ring true given that we're really only one story removed from Disassembled (House of M ended about a month ago--Disassembled itself ended just about a year ago). Plus, Bendis has stated that Disassembled wasn't initially intended to spin into House of M, and that HoM was thought up later.

To sum it up: you've got 2003's big event (Secret War) changing to accomodate the ramifications of 2005's big event (House of M) which was an afterthought of 2004's big event (Avenger's Disassembled) ALL tying into 2006's big event (Illuminati/Whose Side Are You On?). Meanwhile, we've got characters appearing before they should, timelines changing in the middle of stories, and things happening with little or no explanation.

It seems like Marvel is leaping from event to event to event without really making sure that their univese fits together! This is incredibly frustrating as a reader. Continuity really went out of style for a couple of years there, and I'm glad to see it creeping back in to comics (what's the point of reading a periodical, dramatic saga if nothing builds on what came before?), but how can Marvel expect readers to take their unfolding stories of a shared universe seriously if they can't keep the universe in order? How do you respond to these issues as EIC?

2: Another Concern--Much Shorter, I Promise!!) It's been said that there is no Marvel mandate to "write for the trade." I find this a little hard to believe at times (House of M seemed a little padded), but Spider-Man: The Other really takes the cake...

Part 1: "You don't look so hot, Spidey."; Part 2: "Oops! You might be dying!" ; Part 3: "Oh, yeah it's not looking good..." ; Part 4: "You're dying...Bend over and kiss your butt goodbye!" ; Part 5: "Well, you're dying, but there's just enough time to get Aunt May into some Iron Man armor!" ; Part 6: "FIGHT!" ; Part 7, 8, and 9: ?!? ; Part 10, 11, and 12: Aftermath.

Five issues of build-up and three issues of aftermath?! Twelve issues of a crossover that could have EASILY been fit into seven or eight issues...Your thoughts?

3: A COMPLIMENT!!) Though I have some complaints with Marvel these days, the books I enjoy, I REALLY enjoy. There are a lot of great Marvel titles to be found these days, and I'm thankful for that! I'm also really intrigued by the Decimation storyline, and am eager to see where it leads my favorite X-Characters.

Thanks again for taking the time to answer these questions every week--sorry for the ranting! Keep up the good work!

Dear Joe,

I'm a BIG fan and big DEFENDER here of you, Bendis, and Millar. Therefore, I'm gonna go out on a limb and ask TWO questions.

1. Now that Moon Knight's going to be moving to A-list status (sounds like it), any big plans for another mercenary? You know, the one with the MOUTH? (I mean, outside of the book with Cable)

2. Can you clear up some recent continuity issues? Which New Avenger arcs occur pre/post HoM, and more importantly, where does the Wolverine: Origins and Endings mini fall in terms of continuity? Love the books, I'm just a tad confused.

Keep up the good work and I'm looking forward to "Whose Side Are You On" very much!!!

Why the huge difference in Canadian pricing on Marvel books and when is this going to be corrected? You beat me to my first question.

My questions for Joe:
1. When will the Canadian prices of Marvel comics be lowered to accurately reflect the value of the Canadian versus US dollar? The Canadian dollar has maintain a level of around $0.86 US dollars for quite some time but Canadian comic buyers have yet to see this reflected in Marvel pricing. A Marvel comic with a price of $2.50 US translates to $2.90 Canadian with today's exchange rate, while the current on the comic price of $3.50 Canadian is an additional 60 cents that Canadians are soaked for.

Similarily a comic with a price of $2.99 US is $3.47 Canadian with the exchange rate yet Canadians are paying $4.25 Canadian, a whopping 78 cents over the exchange rate.

This may not seem like much per comic but when I'm spending thousands of dollars per year, the cost adds up.

2. In issue #466 of Uncanny X-Men, I counted 27 pages of advertising, including the back cover. 6 of the pages were Marvel related advertising but to me that still counts as advertising.

Similarily, there were 27 pages of advertising in issue #5 of 6 of the New Warriors mini series.

I went through my issues of the non Marvel comics I also buy and your main competition had 14 pages of advertising in this month's issue of Ex Machina, while the comics I read from Image had a maximum of 6 pages of advertising. Interestingly, several independant comics I read, have only advertising for their own products; meaning no outside advertising.

The lower number of ad pages make for a pleasant read while I don't even want to pick up the high ad comics again.

How can you justify having more pages of advertising than pages of story? Will Marvel comics become the Cosmo magazines of the comic world and have 100's of pages of ads with stories I'll have to hunt for on every 20th page?

3. What do you say to a long time X-titles buyer and reader who has become disillusioned due to the constant big events, reloadeds, mini series, plot lines left hanging when writers change, poor continuity, poor storylines, title cancellations and relaunches, and artist changes to the point where I no longer read the X-titles in my car before driving home from the comic store but instead hold off reading them for days because it's gotten to the point where I get the same feeling as when it's time to visit the dentist?

I just want to say that I've read Marvel comics for a long time but quit during the chaos/constant crossover circus that occurred prior to the bankruptcy. I got back into reading 3 years ago and spent a lot to buy the back issues I was missing. I continue to spend hundreds of dollars per month but I'm starting to think about quitting again because of the heavy proliferation of X-title related comics and constant upheavel of the writers and artists. I long for a time when there were 5 or 6 X-titles with good stories and regular artists. A time when the ideas being put into the mini series of today were instead incorporated into the regular series.

Frankly I've already told my local comic shop to take my name off the list for many of the X-title mini series, one shots and other things coming out. I will stick to the regular monthly series, see how things go in the next few months and if I'm not happy by the spring, I'll quit reading or cut back on mainstream comics and explore more independant comics.

I apologize if my previous two paragraphs are considered a rant, I just want Joe to know where I'm coming from.

Hi Joe,

Quick question: with the team itself getting a mention in Millar's interview in Wizard and your comments this past Friday of a "not-necessarily-the-West-Coast-Avengers" team potentially in the works, is it possible that we'll be seeing a new Champions team made up of the former Avengers who didn't make the cut in Bendis' book, as well as some (hopefully) other non-Avengers characters?

Hello Joe!

I wanted to ask,

Is there any chance of more comics being released with card-stock covers? I've found that with the increase of ads, the pages tend to get warped or distorted during shipping/usage. Not only does a card-stock cover make it easier to read, but it also keeps the comics in better condition.

Thanks,

Ok Mr. Q, first off, I'm loving everything going on at Marvel right now! Kudos to you all.

The question I have is this: Some friends and I were debating this recently. Who is Marvel's elite super team now? Is it the X-men(which is what I've been thinking for a long time now) or is it New Avengers or the FF?? I think the X-men would take premier status in the MU now and have for quite some time. 1) Will we ever see story arc like the Age of Apocalypse in the Ultimate Marvel Universe?

2) You've already talked a lot about not crossing the Ultimate Universe over with the Marvel Universe... What about crossing the Ultimate Universe over with others universe like DC Comics?

3) I recently played X-men Legends 2 Rise of Apocalypse where we see some kinda mix between Ultimate Universe, Marvel Universe and Age of Apocalypse Universe... Why not doing a comic book about this game? Even, a comic book adaptation of the game? It was so cool.

Thanks and make Marvel MINE! Oh yeah MINE!

Hey Joe Q.

I'm excited about the upcoming Moon Knight title being hyped by the House of Ideas. I had a question about it. What would lead us, the readers, to believe that it wouldn't go the way of Iron Man and fall over a year behind schedual AFTER it's been started. We are all still waiting for Iron Man 5 and 6. Why should we buy Moon Knight knowing that this is a possibility?

You didn't address this at all, and since writing the innitial question I understand that the same Nike placement in Sentinel has shown up in Excalibur. I sent an email to Joe Maimone at marvel advertising about the matter and his reply is quoted below:

"i'll have to look into your product placement inquiry as Marvel does not currently offer paid product placements to advertisers in our comics. this practice is normally limited to our movies."

Obviously this only adds to my confusion. What is going on? and why does it feel like this is being slipped past us?

Forgive me if you already addressed this in a previous column, but I feel ping33 had a valid question regarding ad placement in the comic art itself. I found another instance of ad placement (a Nike ad altered to fit on a background character's t-shirt) in this week's Generation M #1. Yet Mr. Maimone told ping33 that Marvel does not offer product placement in comics.

hey joe

i have a question. i would love to know who i have to write to, sleep with, or protest to to get a REAL Storm story. not some black history rewrite to put the only two black marvel heroes together in time for martin luther king day. i mean she has so much potential is there really not one writer at marvel besides claremont, who utterly refuses to advance the character willing to write for her, her as a character and not some pair. someone willing to give her the same status afforded the Ms Marvels and the spiderwomans? This is proably my only chance to get a real answer to this question so i figured what the heck. After reading House of M and seeing her relegated to about 3 pages in 8 issues it just made me incredibly sad. All those heros, all those important characters and she was just pure filler, all the ethnic characters were. So please who do i send the petition to??

Hi Joe,

Please, please, please make Planet Hulk be about the following:

Intergalactic forces attack Earth due to the Decimation of Mutants.

The surviving super-heroes (Avengers, etc.) try to find Hulk because he is the only chance they have.

He agrees to do so, only if the heroes and civilisation hand over the whole planet to him.

He saves Earth from the alien invaders, but in turn sets about turning the planet into Maestro's Dystopia.

Joe,

About the whole Echo/Ronin thing... theres been a lot of speculation that the character was somebody else before it was revealed as Echo... Some of the clues seemed a little contradictory to some people

It was obviously decided who was going to be behind the mask when the story arrived (the long hair scene), so why was the character bulked up so much to look like a man? Misdirection? Fan teasing? Lack of communication between artist and writer?

I mean dont get me wrong, I loved the arc and I loved that the Silver Samurai had not been devolved to "Super Henchman" on a whim... but I also liked the character Echo... did you really have to disguise her?

Will her roots to Japan be further explained?

When she comes back will she be Ronin? Echo? Rococo?

Hell was the story title of "Ronin" even a reference to her, or was it about the Samurai, because nobody referred to her by that name...

1) ‘Give me a red’? Does this mean someone (Ed Brubaker) will finally begin to explore the Cap-Nuke connection? Great call in that case. Or is Frank Miller coming back to do some Marvel work?

2) I think it was a great and charitable initiative for the entire industry survival to introduce Stephen King into the comic business. However people I’ve chatted with have pointed out that the old Dark Tower readers will likely not easily find something else according to their taste in the average comics shop and go away on their business afterwards. Would it be a good idea to simply ask Mr. King if he could write his personal suggestions for graphic novels and collections he believes his readers would enjoy at the back of the book, regardless of publisher? If you wish them to stay on the scene and explore some more material this could be a thought.

3) I’m looking forward to Warren Ellis’ Nextwave. When preparing for his old X-Force gig he mentioned that Mystique was the Marvel character he liked best. Could you give him free reigns to make use of the character, either as a mainstay in his new book or in a new solo series?

4) Spider-Man, Wolvie, Captain America and Hulk are arguably your most iconic and internationally well known comics-characters, with Daredevil, Iron Man, Thor, FF, Dr. Strange, Storm etc close behind them. Currently the New Avengers features 3 of the Big 4 and 1-2 of the other superstars. Could you please make it a full house and figure out a way to make the Hulk work as a mainstay? A lot of people, myself included, think it’s a shame he’s never had a chance to shine for an extended run with the team. It’d be lots of fun to really see him cut loose against ridiculously powerful threats and earn the respect of the other heroes.

5) You mentioned last week that the most influential benevolent prime-movers, or Illuminati, of the MU are headed for a big push next year. Something, which struck me since I first saw them, is that the leader of the Eternals was missing. So is there any chance Ikaris or Thena will show up on their meetings in the future?

6) I’ve been enjoying Reginal Hudlin’s new Black Panther book, but as an old Priest run and general MU reader, am worried that it’s unclear if the new origin (which I have no problem with) happened ’10 years ago’ in Marvel time or currently. His recent X-Men and Spider-Man appearances seem somewhat contradictory on that point. If the latter case, this would seem to be the by far biggest revision in the last 4 decades of Marvel history. All Fantastic Four and Avengers appearances of Klaw and the Panther would be out, Priest’s run out, Klaw as a mega-powerful force of nature out, Dane Whitman (Black Knight III) as a religious nutcase, Radioactive Man in two places at once etc. Couldn’t you just say ‘This is the new origin but all the old stuff happened with some small modifications when the writer feels it’s necessary’ which would be far easier to digest.

Much of the whole charm and advantage of your company compared to DC was that it was pretty straight and comprehensible with a few necessary re-modifications here and there, but still understandable. If you don’t take care with the Panther I fear it would become another Hawkworld-style mess, with glaring contradictions appearing whenever he showed up.

7) Ultimate Thor is such a brilliant concept. Instead of focusing on the Asgard connection, it seems to use the notion that since the other half of his parentage is the Earth-spirit itself, naturally he should be very concerned about the well being of the planet and its people. Is there any chance you could let that concept carry over to the main universe as his mother Gaea resurrects her son as her environmentally concerned last line of defence? That would rock and make him more accessible by grounding him firmly in the world of all the other characters.

8) You mentioned that you were interested in producing more Skrull Kill Crew. That seems like a great idea. I think it’s one of the forgotten series with highest potential in the Marvel stable. I’m looking forward to it. Two other ones are Marvel Universe by Roger Stern and ClanDestine by Alan Davis. I believe they were some of the most entertaining work either ever did. Is there any chance that you could overview if either book would be fit for a comeback? Both of them make use of the full potential wonder and fun of the Marvel world. Alan is great on his own, but, given his recent great Hulk/Devil Dinosaur story, I think Eric Powell would help make the Marvel Universe book even better in a collaboration with Stern.

9) Over the years it seems to have become an ongoing tradition among many creators to let other characters shine by letting them have an all too easy time handling the Hulk. Imho this basically serves to undermine the entire character concept. When pissed or motivated enough, he’s supposed to have the greatest amount of raw power of all the MU heroes.

We see this take in rare instances, like when he survives a point-blank nuke, physically bests Onslaught, overloads the Absorbing Man, stops and almost kills the Juggernaut, breaks out of a force-field holding Silver Surfer, Dr Strange & Namor combined captive. When he pushes a Thor who’s 10x stronger than normal towards the ground, withstands Thanos’ Silver Surfer’s or Firelord’s blasts, heals a new body after being turned to powder etc. However, far more frequently he seems to get de-powered a lot with, say, bone-claw Wolvie doing serious damage (Heck even adamantium Wolvie shouldn’t be able to push with enough force to do any damage), Deadpool impaling him with a lamp pole, Giant-Man easily beating up a horde of copy-Hulks etc. Or more recently, the (stated as) considerably less powerful ultimate version of the Thing taking him out with one blow.

Is there any chance you could try to make sure he’s consistently treated more like an unstoppable force of nature which no sane heroes this side of Thor & Silver Surfer should ever be able to fight on remotely even footing? It’s the concept that makes the character fun after all.

10) Is the other big problem, which you've inferred towards in past threads, that Marvel and other publishers have lost contact with the younger readerships?

Possibly due to having too grim content, many writers not having enough fun with their projects (which tends to carry over to international successes like One Piece), incomprehensible continuity (particularly in the DC case), not enough high-quality completely self-contained books (which tend to become more popular with the main, casual readership)and the like?

It's been a few months since the Marvel Flip-Books have been in the 7-11's. How have they been doing in terms of sales?

Also, is there any interest to bring back a "Marvel Comics Presents" type series that focuses on 3-4 different stories with some lesser known (or under-exposed) characters mixed in with our current faves???

i was just wondering if there is a chance, how slim it might be, for the return of nate grey inthe main marvel universe. between the aftermath of house of m and exiles there just has to be a way to bring him back.

So Joe, some weeks ago it was asked if now that Madureira is exclusive to Marvel, if there were any plans to bring Battle Chasers to the ICON imprint, and you had expressed at least a moderate interest in making this happen.

Any updates in this regard?

Hey Joe,

I'm not sure if you have any influence over Marvel DVD releases, but I was wondering.... With all the new interest in Marvel comic book properties lately, what are the odds of releasing the 1966 "Marvel Superheroes" television series written and directed by Ralph Bakshi (et al)? I grew up with reruns of this show in the 1980's and frankly, they're a big part of the reason that I became a Marvel Zombie. I realize that some of the rights might be in question, since several companies now on the rights to various characters, but what about the characters that Marvel now controls, like Captain America and Iron Man? Any chance?

1. How important are reviews and letters to your editors and yourself in determining the direction of your books and stories? If in spite of very negative reviews and letters, the books still continue to sell, would you take the reviews into account? or are sales the be all and end all ?

2. you mentioned that Speedball is DEAD. What's steve ditko going to say to that?

3. Which artist besides Jim Lee would you love to have back at Marvel? I am personally hoping for Art Adams and Walter Simonson.

thanks for your time!

I was reading the December 2005 issues of Fast Company magazine and the picture and comments by you in their Fast Talk: Creative Leaders section. It was great to see comic books being represented in the business press. (Great pic, too!)

1. Are you (or any other Marvel-related folks) going to be appearing in any other non-comics/non-entertainment publications or websites?

2. How important is it for the people in the comic book industry to be shown in non-comics/non-entertainment publications or websites? Is it something that you think can help the industry?

Will Marvel be expanding the locations of characters and teams? I ask since, with the exception of Wakanda and some of the West Coast stuff in the Runaways, practically everything happens in New York while DC has events in many (fictional) cities across the world.

Hi Joe, another few questions:

1). Any chance of a monthly Iron Man ongoing in the near future? I only ask as he's one of my fave characters and the bi-monthly thing is a little irritating.

2). You've been E-I-C for a while now. Any story proposals you've seen that looked good on paper while the execution left a little to be desired? (Go on! Name names. You know you want to....)

3). Will the (just announced) Moon Knight ongoing live up to the hype?

4). Any chance of giving the Taskmaster an origin series or even (holds breath) an ongoing title?

As ever, thank you kindly for your time.

What are your reactions and comments regarding this Joe Casey quote from comicsreporter.com (http://www.comicsreporter.com/index.php/briefings/commentary/3537/) which was featured in Publisher's Weekly e-mail comics-related newsletter:

"[T]hese days, you might get six issues before they fold up shop because it's not a blockbuster right out of the gate. The ironic thing is... knowing that we might only have six issues, we're still wasting space, padding stories, taking forever to make our point."

Hi there,

I have been enjoying the Other storyline thus far for the most part, but I have a question regarding the current rating system.

Is "A" still supposed to stand for All Ages? If so, I am guessing someone erred with regards to the most recent issue of Friendly Neighborhood Spiderman (#3), which was interesting, surprising, but definitely not for younger readers (a surprising fact as the title implies a younger audience I believe).

Will this be addressed, as I do not believe this was the first ratings issue? Imagine if Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire accidentally went out as G? Someone would have been sued?

Cheers,

1)When you saw the F4 movie, were you happy with the way Dr. Doom was handled and if you had it your way, would you want the monarch of Latveria to be in the sequel, it seems that is what they were hinting at the end of the movie ? Also would you want him to yell Richards ?

2)Now that Latveria is a "free" nation, when will Doom return to regain his empire, his wealth, his robots, his armor, and even his own body ? Doom hasn't been seen since "Authoritative Action."

Thank you,

First off when the dotcomics first came out on Marvel.com I sent an e-mail praising them and saying how it would be cool to have Marvel comics on CD/DVD so that I could have the entire run of Avengers or X-Men at the push of a button. At the time you sent me a reply saying "Whoooa that would be way to expensive!" Well I am officially here to tell you "I told you so"!!!! haha

Anyway I am supremely digging the integration of the Marvel Universe with characters jumping out of their comic "safety zones" it reminds me of the time when i first started reading comics. Please tell me that it is here to stay and if there are any plans for a bigger integration of the Marvel comics universe.

Peter Milligans run on x-men isn't as good as I thought it would be and I love his work.
Is it just that batch of x-men who are hard to write? That love triangle is getting tired, Iceman is written terrible and he has so much potential. I mean its actully my dream team of x-men and its being destroyed. Who is taking over the x-men titles?

The solicitation for New Avengers #16 says Alpha Flight will be a special guest star! Of course, it also says Alpha Flight is about to engage in thier final battle.

Now I assume you can't say exactly what fate will befall Alpha Flight, but what are your thoughts on the team? Are they one of those properties that (since the original run ended) just hasn't had the right person to guide it, or are they beyond saving and need to be killed off? How does the future look for Canada's one and only super team?

Joe,

During a Mike Marts chat, Mike said that X-Force (the original characters, not Peter Milligan's X-Force, although his was brilliant) is possibly in the works for another series. With Rob Liefeld saying that he currently has no plans to go back to X-Force, at least not in the near future, what is the current status of any news on the creators involved or the book in general? Is it all too premature?

Kill Mac Gargan. He serves no purpose in having the Venom symbiote. He's a simple character.

And I know there are tons of bums here that will probably want to kill Gambit. Don't listen to them. They're bald, fat, and can't get laid. Gambit's awesome! BTW, are there any plans to make Sabretooth more of a major player in the Marvel Universe like Frank Tiere had planned in Weapon X? I think that character needs to be taken further. I mean he's just as smart as Kingpin and more powerful. Plus he knows secrets that most criminal would have nightmares over? Kingpin would crap his pants if he ever met Apocalypse. Dude like my signature says: Make Sabretooth the new Kingpin!

New Warriors was awesome! Please don't kill Speedball.

Why, out of all the artists that lost their jobs when Dreamwave closed down, did you hire the guy who caused it's destruction? Pat Lee's work has been widely criticized by the internet comic community as being just plain awful. It's been speculated that the only reason Marvel works with him is because his team, Dream Engine, makes sure that his work gets finished on time. Is there any truth to this or do you geniuinely like his work?

hey Joe - I'm one of those older readers, recently returned to the universe. For what it's worth, I think you, Bendis & crew have been doing a nice job respecting the Lee/Kirby/Ditko foundations, while giving them a good shake.

My question is about Ditko: have you had any personal or professional contact with him? Is he in good health? What does he think of the Spidey movies? I've given up on ever seeing a new Ditko drawing of Spider-man, but I remember hearing once that someone saw unpublished Doc Strange pages at his house. I'm a huge fan and I'd really be interested in any tidbits. Thanks.

ps - yeah I saw that recent hardback selection of his Marvel work, I think I actually own most of the original comics, though they are yellowed behind plastic bags.

The release of "Essential Peter Parker, the Spectacular Spider-Man" brings more of the work of Bill Mantlo back into print. (Some of his work on The Champions was also reprinted in "Essential Super-Villian Team-Up".) He was an outstanding writer, underrated by the current comics community. With your comments about the name "The Champions" being tossed around the bullpen, will we see an Champions collection released soon? How about a 2nd volume of Essential PPTSSM? Or some of Mantlo's other work, especially "The Micronauts" or "ROM Spaceknight"? And would you please consider collections of "Weirdworld" or "Strikeforce Morituri"?

Boss Man... what's up with ICON not running with the Whedonverse?! I'm sure there's some kinda legally binding hoozfutz for those licenses... but MAN! Joss is gonna be writing this canon Buffy series, and there's heated talks of a Spike movie, the best should be with the best! Whedonverse and Marvel are a perfect match. You should be on the phone trying to convince Joss to keep it all in the House!

Also, I need my Moon Knight fix! Can we have maybe a teeny tiny update on the status of the book... maybe some new preview art? Moon Knight, as a character design, has always been one of my favorites. I have drawings I made of Cyclops, Moon Knight and Cap fighting Red Skull and Baron Zemo when i was like, 6 yeras old back in 1989. David Finch's art is better, though.

What criteria is used to determine which creators are allowed a creator owned Icon imprint title? For example, JMS has his Book of Lost Souls published thru Icon yet Marvel would not publish John Romita Jr's Grey Zone, who has been a fixture at Marvel for over twenty years.

Dearest Joe Q.,

I'm curious as to why we haven't seen the return of Wolverine's brown and tan costume. It certainly seems to be not only a fan favorite, but a creator favorite as well (as reported in a Wizard article just before Millar and Romita Jr.'s last Wolvie run began). It seems as though both creators and fans alike think that the blue and yellow togs are a bit, uh, wussie, while the brown and tan's are not only tougher looking, but make some sort of sense as to why they would be worn my our pal Logan (i.e., he could hide in the shadows / wilderness more easily in the browns than in the yellows). So, will we see a return of the brown and tans, and why haven't we yet?

Joe--

Recently Erik Larsen made comment in his column at CBR about how most current artists draw "their" version of characters as opposed to the olden days of following a model sheet.

For example, no matter who the artist was Peter Parker's hairline and chin were fairrly unique and he was recognizable as a person. These days, this sort of visual continuity is missing from most comic characters who are featured in different books.

Do you think artists having full freedom to make the characters look however they want is better than following a model? Is there a middle ground that could be met where key features (such as hairlines, noses, chins, etc) could be met, but everything else left to the artist?

Okay, lets begin at the beginning. DC has been tying in stuff to Crisis since Identity Crisis. Count all those OMAC tie-ins and Villains United tie-ins and so on and so on and you have a much larger tapestry than the one you’re presenting, so you’re numbers are way offAlso, by using your logic, DC’s “One Year Later” (which I think is a very cool idea) could be viewed as an entire line wide tie-in of Crisis’ aftermath. And, that’s not even counting the new titles that will spin out of Crisis. That's a heck of a lot of books times an entire year of publishing.
But, I also don’t buy into your logic when it comes to the aftermath books. The idea with crossovers or events (as we do) is that stuff changes within the Universe. Because stuff changes you will most likely see new books appearing. But this doesn’t need a crossover or event to happen. -Joe Fridays Week 24

But realistically speaking these ideas by publishers live or die on their own merit, there isn't counter programming if that's what you're asking, at least not at Marvel.-Joe Fridays Week 22

Like I've said before, at Marvel we don't have a crisis.-Joe Fridays Week 21

It’s not tough to see, when DC claims that every title but four or five tie into Crisis which is then followed by their “One Year Later” line-wide crossover, it’s not a stretch to say that at first blush, over 90% of their DCU output over the next year is corporately created.-Joe Fridays Week 14

My question is.....What made you do a sudden 180 on your position on this matter?

Hi Mr. Quesada,

I'm a big fan of Ultimate X-Men but there's some things that've been buggin' throughout the series. For one Nightcrawler keeps changing from black to blue, why? Is'nt supposed to be pitch black? I remeber Mark Millar saying a long time ago that Ult. Nightcrawlers body does'nt reflect light thats why he's black.

Why did ya'll change Wolverine's costume?

Why do the hardcover collections all have just Wolverine on the covers?

Its called X-Men not Wolverine. I know Wolverine sells but would'nt team covers that feature Wolverine in group shots sell equally well? or maybe even more so than just Wolverine covers?

I did see that there's a cover for an oversized tpb that collects the first 12 issues with a team cover by Yu that's definatley a step in the right direction. Also are you gonna release a better image of that cover? cause the one thats out is angled.

Do you know if Fox is gonna give Cyclops the shaft in X3? buzz is he's dead.

Can we please have a Sub-Mariner Essentials volume? And even though I asked ages ago, how about a "Not Brand Ecch", "Sgt Fury" or Marvel Western volume? I mean, while I'm a fan of Killraven, X-Factor, and even Spider-Woman...Namor should have come long before these...

1) Are we going to see a more cohesive effort in terms of Spider-Man's character? With all the stuff happening to him (House of M, the Other) shouldn't he be affected in each of his books? I just picked up Son of M (great read by the way) and Spidey is pretty pissed off, but I don't see this anywhere else.

2) What do you say to those critics that say House of M was a cop out from not being able to handle changes (more mutants) that Marvel made themselves? Isn't the Ultimate universe the place to handle the marvel universe as it used to be? Or is the Utimate universe itself getting too complicated (all the mutants introduced in Ultimate X-men, the huge scope of the Ultimates) ?

Sorry if this sounded too negative. I really am loving marvel, and I was very pleased to hear the fans of Wolvie's old costume will be pleased.

How much restraint goes into the Ultimate line. For example, are creators content with limiting the number of characters from the 616 universe, or do the editorial teams have to reign them in?

1) With Planet Hulk on the horizon, is there any chance of some more Hulk trades? Specifically, a collection of "Future Imperfect"?

2) With Deadpool making his Ultimate debut, would Deadpool trades be out of the question? Even though I have many of the issues, I'd love to have collections of the Kelly and Simone runs, just to name a few.

3) What are you feelings on the Merry Christmas/ Happy Holidays dispute?

4) With the upcoming focus on Marvel's cosmic characters, can we look for any trades showcasing these characters?

I constantly harass poor Fabian every month on AIM after Cable & Deadpool comes out. He has been one of my favorite comic writers since I first started collecting 12 years ago or so. I personaly feel that he is a serriously overlooked writer in comicdom. He has a great sense of charactr and plot building. I mean hell, wasn't he the one who introduced the concept of the third Summers brother?
Are there any projects that we can see more of him on? Any chance of him coming back to an X-Book?
And also I am a huge deadpool fan (I've got a tattoo to prove it...and hopefully another one soon). What do fans have to do to get their favorite merc with a mouth some respect in the marvel universe proper? Where is our Essential deadpool books? Whaere are the deadpool crossovers? Where is Agent X?
Well um thanks for your time.

As an aspiring comic book artist I hated to see CrossGen dissapear because their "Apprentice" program seemed like a great idea, they would groom them slowly and give them small assignments until they were fully ready to handle the major books on their own, they produced some amazing artists which i know you're all to familiar with since they all landed at Marvel (Steve McNiven, Andrea DiVitto, Joshua Middleton, etc etc) as they had some great teachers in Bart Sears and Brandon Peterson, so my question is, does Marvel have it's own "Apprentice" program but it's never mentioned and if not, why doesnt Marvel implement an "Apprentice"-like program.

Being Marvel I'm sure you get your fair share of submissions and thru portfolio reviews at Cons you find amazing talent, I just always wondered where they go before they get assignments.

Joe,

I'm a long-time Marvel fan (what else would I be with a handle like 'Excelsior!'? :D ), and I'm getting kinda peeved by the way many of Marvel's 'big name' writers (predominantly the guys on the flagship/event titles - Bendis, Millar, Ellis, Brubaker, JMS) are handling the Marvel Universe as a whole. For several years now it's been the in thing to retcon/rewrite characters' backstories to incorporate 'dark', 'edgy' and 'shocking' reveals, even when they contradict decades worth of stories and characterisation (I'm thinking of examples like Pietro and Wanda in 'DisAssembled'/'House of M', Bad-ass Bucky from 'Captain America', elements of Millar's 'MK Spider-Man' run, 'Sins Past'/'Ezekiel', 'Deadly Genesis', and from the looks of it, 'The Illuminati'). The impression I get is that writers want to tell certain stories (normally with a more 'mature', 'adult' sensibility, whatever that is...), and if that means throwing out years of well-loved, classic tales or besmirching previously great characters for a quick bit of controversy, so be it.
Obviously this isn't the case with all Marvel's writers - Dan Slott, Allan Heinberg, Robert Kirkman, Brian K. Vaughn, Sean McKeever and others are proving it's possible to work within the tone of the Marvel Universe that generations of readers (be they casual browsers, die-hard fans or somewhere in the middle, like me) and still tell amazing stories. But I must admit, those guys are in the minority, and I'm personally finding it harder and harder to care about the characters and the consequences of stories due to the way certain writers use them.

If you're wondering where the question was in all that, it's this: in which direction is Marvel headed in future - adding new faces to the established pantheon of characters (Gravity and the Young Avengers being fantastic examples of this) and telling stories in the mighty Marvel manner, or reinventing the major players in a more 21st century 'adult' style for the portion of the audience that is less attached to the traditional status quo? I know it's impossible to please everybody, so I'm wondering - who are you aiming to please?

The industry seems to be quite cyclical, going through a phase of finding new ways to subvert and change classic characters to keep them fresh, then stripping all that away to embrace the iconic nature of a character that made them popular... and round again.

Do you believe in one more than the other, and is there any point in trying to fight the cycle, or should you just go with the flow, and make the best stories you can?

1) In Joe Friday's #27, you hinted at a possible series (similar to West Coast Avengers, perhaps) featuring some old school Avengers, can you give us any more info on this?

Dear Uncle Joe.

1)With the introduction of so many new teen superheroes, would it be wise to use the team book format to keep them in the minds of the fans. How else are you going to keep characters like Machine Teen,Gravity,Sentinel, and even Arana in the public eye?

2)I was suprised that sci fi writers like Peter David and JMS were not apart of the Annihilation story, you would think that the creator Of Babylon 5 would be a shoe in.So ,were they at least, advisors on this project, and our series spinning out these story going to have them at the helm?

3)Do you feel that older work that can be perceived as racially offensive, should be reprinted?

Joe, I'm really excited about what I see coming up at Marvel. Haven't read Marvel in years, but all the previews and stuff have really got me juiced. Here are my questions.

1. The cosmic event has really peaked my interest. One thing that I think would be really cool is to see a grade A super powered mutant, something in the order of X-Man (a.k.a Nathan Summers) to just look around at everything that's going on on Earth, say the hell with this, and pack his bags and head out into deep space. It'd be fun and interesting to see someone like Nathan take on some of those snooty-tooty cosmic guys. The way I see it, humans can hold their own against these guys. I'd love to see a regular monthly title that chronicles the adventures of a high powered mutant character out in the wild, wild, universe. If Hulk can do it, why not a mutant?

2. Will we ever see the Beyonder again, A de-powered Beyonder perhaps?

3. Whatever became of the Beyonder's Battleworld? Seems to me there was a significant population of people left there left out in the dead of space. I'd like to know what's happened to them since.

4. Will we ever get a series of Marvel collectibles that are equal to the quality of DC Direct? I would LOVE to have a Dark Phoenix figure that I could put up on my shelf and not be scared to go to sleep at night. Have you seen those Phoenix figures they sell right now? Yikes! 'Dem things give me nightmares.

That's all I have for now, thanks!

JoeyQ,

1) Since the finale of Secret War has been released, are we going to see Nick Fury's new status quo reflected in Captain America?

2) Any chance of a "Ben Reilly" variant for a "The Other" issue?

3) While hardly a reliable source. LITG reported Ed Brubaker was going to be replacing Claremont on Uncanny before #500. Can you comment on this?

4) In House Of M#8, Bobby Drake was de-powered to show that Marvel was serious about "No More Mutants". Can you give us some insight into the editorial decision to revise this less tham two months later, and do you feel it damages Marvel's already frail cre3dibility for making lasting changes in its books?

Hey Joe.

You've long touted Marvel's policy of putting good stories ahead of continuity, and there have been some amazing comics that have sprung from it. But now that Marvel is once again focusing on universe-spanning event storylines, at least in the near future, are you going to be showing more concern towards books taking place in the same universe, at about the same time, being consistent in their portrayals of characters, organizations, events, locations, etc.,? Personally, I was dismayed when I read the tie-ins to House of M and saw that they had apparently no connection to the main storyline, or outright contradicted it to the extent that, for example, the New Thunderbolts tie-in killed off Genis-Vell - as a lowly private - who appeared, alive and as an important politician, in House of M #6.

This has made me trepidatious about upcoming Marvel events that span more than one book. Personally, I'm hesitant to buy a lot of comics that supposedly tie-in to an important event, when there's a chance that only a few of them are actually telling the same story. What are your thoughts?

And on a related note...

Now that it's been revealed that Nick Fury is no longer the head of SHIELD, and hasn't been for some time if the New Avengers is any indication, will there be any repercussions in books that currently feature the him in his old job capacity? I'm thinking in particular about his key supporting role in Daniel Way's Hulk storyline (as well as Nick Fury's Howling Commandos). Good story or not, I'm confused by this lack of continuity between concurrenty published titles. Does Way's Hulk story take place over twelve issues behind the New Avengers?

If so, would this be a kind of situation in which you may consider the return of at least occasional footnotes in a storyline, in order to alleviate the confusion this brings to people who buy multiple concurrent best-selling Marvel titles? (i.e. "This storyline takes place before the Secret War mini-series/New Avengers #1" for any comic that still depicts Nick Fury as the head of SHIELD?)

Seeing as how many complain that you are disrespectful to DC, how about posting some DC titles that you have recently read and enjoy? Also, has anyone made any pitches for the Shroud? Reading about the excellent Underworld story has me thinking that he would be perfect for a Max or Marvel Knights title. It would be like the Thunderbolts, except exactly the opposite. He's a great hero that a lot can be done with. Plus, his main cast would be villains. You've gotta love that.

In the recent March solicitations there's a listing for a Squadron Supreme trade that includes the Squadron's aperances that followed the end of the Gruenwald (sp?)ir maxi series, from the "Death of a Universe" graphic novel to the "New World Order" graphic novel.

The trade is missing the four part "Journey into Mystery" story from Quasar #13 through #16 as well as any follow up apperances by the Squadron in that series (like issue 17's "Born to Run").

Hi from Spain.

It`s my first post and it`s obviously a question for Joe Q.

"Will we see another similar event to Annihilation but using the magical sector of the MU?"

If Marvel is focusing its forgotten corners, it seems logical to do before the big Civil War event.

You know, using characters like Dr Strange, Blade, Ghost Rider, Gargoyle, Jack Russell, Hellstorm... or Thor!!!

I`m still waiting for a explaining connection between Blazing Skull and Ghost Rider.

That`s all for now. Lots of thanks.

1)Please dont tell me that after the events of Secret War #5, that you still think that a SHIELD series would not be viable? You told me that at Con like a few years ago, but after the reading the brilliance of Bendis and Dell Otto, your opinion has had to change?I know about the upcoming Nick Fury mini, so no need to pimp it,player.

2)What control or influence does Marvel have over the presentation of their books? I am puzzled why books like Spider man are sold directly next to the action figure section or by the DVD's. At the 7-11 the books just get lost in the gravesite that is the newstand.

Hey Mr. Da Q,

I feel like i have to head off my question with a biography as to not piss off some people around here so I apologize for the length.

For as long as I have read comics, about 17 years, I have been a Marvel "Zombie". Recent delays in shipping have hindered my enjoyment of some of your quality stories, like the awesome Secret War. While I enjoyed it I feel that had I not had to wait so long for the last issues i would have enjoyed it even more. Dont get me wrong Ive enjoyed all your stories, and a week delay here and there is no problem i understand shtuff happens, but darn it i want Ultimates. Anyway my real question is this, today I read right here on Newsarama, a Q & A session with Dan Didio, who I would call your somewhat counterpart over at the Distinguished Competition, anyway in regards to delays in books Mr. Didio had this commitment to make on Timeliness for his companys product. "DD: Every effort is being made to keep all books tied into Crisis and One Year Later on time. We are realize that It is essential to maintain the greatest impact; the books have to come out on time." WHat is your response to your competitors effort? will Marvel make similar attempts to timelieness and attempt to compete with DC in this manner? I only ask because i would love to get a whole mess of quality comics each week, kick back with some chron, and enjoy the adventures of the Marvel Universe.

Oh and Thanks again for an Awesome 2005, Looking forward to many things in 2006 especially Annihilation. Happy holidays Mr. Da Q.

Hey Joe,

Yet another series of questions. As you may have noticed, I'm very inquisitive.

Now that we know Civil War is about a superhero registration act, I was wondering about the following:

1. Is this any different from the constantly-referenced Mutant Registration Act? i.e. Does this only pertain to vigilantes who fight crime and hide their identities, or will this affect every individual in the Marvel Universe with superhuman abilities?

2. Obviously someone at Marvel must have considered the similarities between this storyline and one of the key plot points of The Watchmen. Is this story going to be intrinsically different from that premise, or is Civil War going to be be such an incredible story that we won't even care about any similarities?

3. Since the registration act is a government program, and according to Wizard will heavily involve the Avengers, does this mean that we should be watching The New Thunderbolts more closely, given that a recent subplot involves Warbird, Hank Pym and Baron Zemo working on a government plot to "save the world?" I'd love to see this book, one of the best mainstream superhero comics you're putting out, to get some serious attention in an upcoming cross-over to help bring in some more readers.

2. In Civil War will heroes give up their super hero life, rathre than reveal their identity?
3. I know it may be a bit early to reveal anything, but will we see new super heroes come out of Civil War?
4.I loved the GLA Christmas Special, any chance we'll see more of these characters?
5. And finally whats your favorite DC book currently being published?

Greetings Joe,

Well, I haven't followed any Marvel comics for a few years now, but I've decided to dip my toe back into the Marvel Universe a bit with Civil War and Annihilation. My question is about Civil War. Is there a bad guy in the story?

Based on what you've said so far there doesn't seem so. It seems to me a subject that has no bad or good side, just two opposing opions. That's what got me interested in the story.

But I must ask, when will the main X-Books (Uncanny X-Men, X-Men, Wolverine) be readable again? You seem to "reboot" them every six months or so, yet keep retelling mainly the same stories, with many of the same creators, many times just shuffled from one title to the next.

Joe,

Respectfully, Civil Wars seems to be yet another example of Marvel vs. the Bush administration. It is plain by the treatment of Bush and Republicans in general in Marvel titles that the company edict is that they are always to be portrayed as evil, stupid, or both. Civil Wars writer Mark Millar is admittedly the "biggest liberal in comics." Is this just another excercise in Marvel hatred of the present administration, the War on Terror, and the Patriot Act? Is the politically correct side of the Civil War (and being Marvel, we know there is going to be one) going to be written as perfect and right? Or can we expect good and logical arguments on both sides of whatever conflict you portray? While Marvel is not known for its evenhandedness when it comes to politics, I'd hate for this to be yet another comic book Bush hatchet job.

"Civil War" sure looks like the fallout of "Identity Crisis" to me. Plus Marvel's got the Seven Soldiers-style Annihilation specials bookending 4 miniseries on B or sometimes C list characters. Granted, you've probably learned a DC lesson and are saying off the top you don't know which books will be important in terms of Civil War crossovers yet.

How do you address the issue that Marvel is racing to catch up with DC these days - from a fan's perspective, it sure looks like it. Not that that matters, but content-wise it looks like some events are in direct relation/reaction to what DC is doing.

And if you mention Secret Wars, Crisis on Infinite Earths, Watchmen, or any other series in your reply again I'm going to scream.

Merry X,mas to you and yours Joe!

We know Hawkeye is back alive from the ending of HoM. We don't know where he is or what he is doing. Ed Brubaker was asked if he had any plans for the character and said no, but if anybody did, it was probably Bendis. When will we see a Bendis/Brandon Peterson Hawkeye ongoing? I know the last one flopped but that's two A-list creators on a character who got a ton of publicity recently. I think it would sell and I mean, hell, Spiderwoman has her own title now...

Failing this, can you at least tell us when the loose end of Hawkeye's ressurrection will be tied up and where?

I saw where you mentioned that you felt DC dropped the gauntlet to the back and forth digs about each company. I'm sure that you grew up with a strong enough moral background to have heard, "two wrongs don't make a right," before...so I won't repeat it here. :D

Being that it is the holiday season, could you find it in your heart to contact your counterpart at DC and try come to an agreement with them to at least put the "bad blood" part to rest for once and for all? I'm not saying for either side to completely stop ribbing each other, but obviously there is some "bad blood" if anyone at DC has asked for your head on a platter (or even if that's just how you perceive the situation...I don't know what was said).

You seem like a genuinely nice guy. Lately, you've changed a lot of my preconceived notions about you and Marvel. I mean...I still look at your hype with the same eye I'd look at a used car that the salesman is pushing me towards...but I don't hold that against you as much. :D You seem like a good-hearted enough man to be able to swallow some pride and hurt feelings in order to try to do the spiritually good thing (I'd say the Christian thing to do, in respect to your faith, but I'm muslim, so I went for a neutral faith-based deal).

Sincerely,
Kevin Huxford

Question for Joe.

It wasn`t more logical in many ways to change the Supreme Power Max title to the Ultimate line than to the MK one?

(Well, honestly, I think it was perfect in the MAX line, but, well... money rules)

I always saw it like an Ultimate Supreme Squad, and it really would be pretty fascinating to see an Ultimates / Supreme Power crossover.

I`ll never understand some things...

Anyway, merry christmas for all from a rainning Spain.

Now that we've seen the amazing work that Ladronn has been doing on the Hulk covers, is there any chance of him making the jump back to a full-time Marvel series (I used to buy Cable just for his art)?

The Dan Slott Spider-Man/Human Torch Limited Series has been my favorite recent interpretation of and tribute to the history of both characters. It made me think a regular series could be done that played up the more reckless, adolescent sides of both characters that could be developed by instant-cool Paul Pope. The guy created an incredibly kinetic Spidey for Tangled Web and renders fire that really burns. I'm not so into a Spidey that's married, dead, or a magical totem, but, even if he is all those things, I'm convinced Paul can give us a Spidey that's actually cool. Any Paul Pope in our future?

Joe,
For two weeks now I have been arguing with others about a far-fetched rumor that Marvel has sold the rights of an unnamed character to DC.
Now if you are able to answer, please confirm this to us and resolve this matter once and for all

This is for Matt, not Joe.

Matt, could you please mark spoilers in your questions? I like that we can ask Joe Q questions about anything in the Marvel U. I like getting info like "How many prelude mini's will Civil War Have?" and info like that. But I don't like getting spoiler info, I'd rather read it myself. So to do this, I've started just reading the questions given, and if I don't want to know I won't read that answer.

But latley some of the questions have contained spoilers. Questions like:

So being that the mutant-registration act was the basis for many X-Men stories of the past, do you think it was inevitable the "metaphor" got extended to the larger superhuman populace?

All I read was Mutant-registration act which I did not know would be involved with this storyline until I read the first line of this question. If this question had been marked as a spoiler, it would not have been ruined.

Could you please mark Spoilers in your questions in the Joe Fridays articles?

Thnx again for answering questions Joe!

1. How bout a 'Untold tales of the House of M' style book. Maybe a quarterly or annual. You could go into details of how Magnus rose to power, who Apocalypse's other Horsemen are, how the Kree came to earth, Storm, Black Panther, and Namor attempting a coup, Quicksilvers failed wooing of Storm, etc.....

2. The loose talk of a Champions and West Coast old school Avengers type book...same entity or 2 diff things all together.

3. How many 'old favs' are returning to New Avengers and how many from the new team are leaving?

4. Hawkeye plans?

5. Starfox plans other than She-Hulk?

6. Thunderbolts RULE!!!!

Also heres a reply to the poster asking about a Marvel character going to DC. I'm sure Joe will clear it up. Dan Didio has said an established character will be making their first appearance in the DCU in 2006. some people are assuming Marvel is lending out Daredevil or some nonsense. I'm 99.99999999% sure that is not the case. Basically it looks like their can be at least 3 answers for this. SPOILERS BELOW!!!

1. Helena Wayne. Catwoman is going to have a baby OYL. Rumors have it being named Helena Wayne, the 70's Huntress. TECHNICALLY she has yet to appear in the post-Crisis DCU. This one is a stretch.

2. Midnighter. DC is going to have a solo book staring a gay character. Midnighter is gay AND in the Wildstorm universe. I'll bet after the Captain Atom series, Midnighter ends up in OYL. Rumors are too that Kathy Kane will be Batwoman and lesbian with her own book.

3. Spirit. The late Will Eisner's Spirit is getting an ongoing by Darwyn Cooke. SUPPOSEDLY in the DCU!

thnx again

Joe, just heard the wonderful news of Marvel putting the original Spider-Man series in nationwide newspapers. This is not a complaint, as my collection of Essential paperbacks will attest, but why did Marvel decide to re-print Spider-Man's earlier stuff, instead of something more recent? Again, not a complaint, since I love the old stuff, I'm just curious in the reasoning behind it.

Thanks for taking the time to read this,

Are you going to let Dan Slott write "The Reckoning War" in the next couple of years? You better! She Hulk 3/100 was easily the best anniversary issue I've ever read in my 22 years of comics love. Also, is Amanda Connor going to get more Marvel gigs? She rules!

Any way you guys could look at your distribution in Australia as its been horrible in New South Wales lately...

Also any chance of the Nova corps getting some consistant action post Annihalation?

Mentioned so often in the late 80's and early 90's(and probably way earlier then that) When are you guys going to get around to making Wolverine lead an X squad...?

As the guy pretty much on top at Marvel. What would be the chances of a serious character swap between Marvel and DC/other competitor??? And also if you had the choice to swap COMPARABLE characters(i.e as in stature within opposing company) who would you take and why? Also who do you think in the current Marvel stable could do the best job with them?

Hey there,

Over the past couple of months, I've noticed that almost all of the Marvel books have looked like someone sat on them. There are creases and cracks in the binding and it's almost impossible to find a book that doesn't look damaged. I know this is a larger printing issue, because my comic retailer is nice enough to let me go through the stacks looking for a book that doesn't look like an elephant packed it.

This wouldn't bother me if I wasn't paying around $3 for 22 pages of comics. For that money I'd don't think it's asking too much to get a mint or near mint copy of a book. I have yet to see this consistant problem with DC, Image or the Independents.

I've been told that you recently changed printers and that's why the binding is so poor.

Any comments?

Joe,

I'm a continuity junkie. I love the shared universe Marvel uses. I also love how much more continuity we're getting lately. That said, it'd be really really nice if you came out with a simple list on a monthly or at least yearly basis telling us which order the comics occur in. This would be really valuable for your biggest customers and for those of us who organize our comics in chronological order. So my question is can you make that list available?

During the hole New universe thing, back in the 80's, marvel had a character called Justice. Is there any chance of bringing the character back for good? Having him cross over from that world to MU? maybe place him on the x-men or Avengers?

The graphic novel along with the extinction of the local comic shop is the future for super heroes in sequential art. Graphic novels deliver more respect, creative freedom, and a wider audience than the floppy magazine format comic. What will it take to stop delaying the inevitable by transforming to a book store friendly, graphic novel format?

Happy New Year to you. Got a few questions.

1- In a recent Joe Fridays you mentioned a new trade dress for an upcoming "event" that I imagine is the Civil War. Any chance we could get a look at it?

2. There were some rumblings about a return of the Champions. What more could you tell us?

3. If you could recommend three Marvel books that you don't think are selling as well as they should, which three would it be and why?

4. What is the status of the Alias TV project (I think it was to be called "Alter Ego?")

5. Will we ever see WHAT IF on a monthly basis again?

One I forgot... all these changes have confused me. What will the roster be for creators of the various X-Men titles in a few months?

And hey, while I'm asking, does the word "New" really bring in higher sales for books? With titles like "New Excalibur" it sounds rather ridiculous...

Hey there Joe,

what is the best way to present a proposal (as a writer)?

I read the submission guidelines on the Marvel website, and it mentions that unsolicited proposals will not be read.

What is the best way to get an idea solicited, and also, what is the best way to get the idea read by you Marvel higer-ups?

Hey Joe Love Ya Brother Happy New Year. ok my Questions are these 1) why are so many new comics 3 bucks now? would going back to the paper stock that new X-men 114 had make comics less i would love to buy more Marvel books! and 2) this is a Question about X-Men Vol.2 or the Jim Lee X-MEn will we see this book become a high profile X book again? Honestly it seems like Ever Since Grant Morrison left the book its become just some low tire book.(Milligan is great but i would let him cut loose and make some fine fine Story lines my friend) rock hope you answer!

I have a Feeling that Civil War is also a Crack against City of Heroes. Because City of Heroes Mission System and Levels in the Game are exactly as Joe Said. You create an ID, Government gives you assignments and you have to run to Contacts to get new missions. Your levels are Security Clearences. Is this true, and is this possibly just one big set up to set up your Marvel MMORPG.

First off Joe, Thank you for giving us some great Avenger books. She-Hulk, Young Avengers, and GLA have truly been exciting reads.

Now to the questions:

1.) Will Scarlet Witch fans see Wanda return sometime in 2006? I think a mini-series / on-going would be great. Of course, I'm biased.

2.) When will we know the result of the "Kill Speedball" poll? I know I voted against him dying, offering plenty of characters in his place. Most had mullets at one time.:)

3.) With the Kill "Speedball" & "Alpha Flight's Last Battle" in New Avengers, do you think the characters are paying for their low sales and canceled runs? Does 2006 look bad or good for fans of New Warriors and Alpha Flight?

4.) Will Avenger fans see a video game in the near future? Probably one with the Captain America movie, but besides that?

Thank you very much for your time if my questions are picked.

joe,

you reported last week on the Storm/Black Panther marriage. May i ask why this idea was even considered in the first place? These two have zero history - both have been involved in character defining relationships for years (forge!) and no matter how good, or "unusual" the marriage story is, it can help but reek of the fact that these two are now married because they are the most prominent black characters marvel has.

Joe, talking about imprints...

Death's Head is back, there's a New Universe project and there are some rumors...

in a recent interview here in Newsarama, Mark Paniccia told that he "heard rumbles about Marvel UK characters"... can you confirm that?

Last june, you said that a return of the Ultraverse is "near to impossible, but...

here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ultraverse#Ultraverse_revival) some Ultraverse creators said that there shouldn't be problems in a revival and now there're also rumors about a new Marvel Next Kirkman-written Prime project... can you say something?

Hey Joe Have to ask you this, and this is something that’s been bugging me for a while. Today I went to a Barns and Noble here in New York the one on 86 street. I went to but a TPB but was shocked to see that like many other B&N stores they had Sh*t pots worth of Books, and NO and I mean NO Exclusive Soft covers of your Marvel Masterworks line. I have gone in to many different B&Ns here in the city and have found this to be the case a lot not just once but almost every time I visit one. I Began to visits Midtown comics here in the city and other local comic shops 'cos i know they will DEFFENETLY have any TPB I need that’s in print. So now to My Question WHY haven’t the Marvel Masterworks books been made available to the direct market in soft cover form? i see DC has started a great line of "Chronicles" books, at good prices. So once more why not just put the books on sale for the whole Market? I don't know if I’m alone on this but i think it would be great and I bet they sell I betcha. So yeah why not?

About Civil War, since it involves a superhuman registration act, will it at all reference the Identity Disc that SHIELD has? I think that it would certainly be a good way to give that miniseries (which I loved, by the by) a bit more validity.

I noticed over the course of the last year that Red Ronin , the giant robot created to combat Godzilla has shown up up quite a bit this year. So far in the "Destroy All Monsters" story arc in EXILES ,issue three of MEGA MORPHS , and used as lure for a trap set up to ambush the Avengers in THE NEW THUNDERBOLTS 13/94 . Also Marvel is publishing an essentials volume of Marvel's successful, yet short lived GODZILLA serie. So is this Marvel testing the waters for a series featuring its daikaiju fighter ?

1) In the last 1-2 years, there has been a steady decline in the quality of comic book paper and cover material on which the titles are being published on. Specifically, there seems to be an increased frequency of spine damage, ripped pages, corner chips, etc ... . Initially it was only the Ultimate books that were affected since the material of the covers was changed. But now it is including the regular books. At the same time, Marvel had increased the cover price to $2.50 from $2.25. Does Marvel (as well as DC and the other comic publishers) plan to do anything to correct the situation? Will we ever see the type of paper material that was used when comics were $1.95 in the late 90's?

2) I liked that She-Hulk had recently been renumbered back to the old issue system (#100). I like purchasing anniversary issues over renumbered titles with a new issue #1. Some of my favorites were Incredible Hulk #250, Fantastic Four #200, Amazing Spider-Man #400. Any chance on bringing more Marvel titles back to the old numbering system? The renumbering to #1 of a regular title (for example Wolverine being renumbered to #1) does not encourage me to buy multiple copies as marketing would like people like me to do. I liked the renumbering back to the old system for Amazing Spider-Man and Fantastic Four (I did buy multiple copies for the anniversary issues). And how about reverting to the old number system on a regular basis? At the very least, it would decrease the headache of filing the same title with different volumes.

3) During the major comic conventions, Marvel has a tendency to not announce artists or writers that are attending until the day of their appearance. As such, comics that I would have brought to have signed if I had known such information never gets brought to the convention. Is there any way for Marvel to announce the artists and writers that will appear at a certain major convention days to weeks before the actual event (either through the convention websites or Marvel's website direct)?

First of all I'm Australian and know very little about North American fauna, but a question has been nagging me about Wolverine. The answer may be obvious to those who live in the US of A and Canada, but it isnt to me.

Why is it that, whenever he goes native or is drawn in the wild surrounded by wild animals, he's always hanging around with wolves? Why not wolverines?
Has he ever been drawn with wolverines?

I don't think Wolverines are pack animals. Larry Hama did an old issue where Logan rescued a wounded wolverine from incarceration and let it loose to eat a mentally ill retarded killer alive.

Joe,

Congrats on a successful 2005 and good luck in the upcoming year. A few questions:

1. A couple of Joe Fridays ago, there was a James Jean pic of the X-Men. I believe you said that you thought it was for a trading card set coming out sometime this year. Is this still accurate? And if so, do you know the format it will be in (i.e. how many cards, how many artists, etc.)?

2. What is Frank Cho's next Marvel project after his stint on New Avengers?

3. Any more news on the "New" X-Force book yet? Are you looking at maybe a convention before you are comfortable releasing more info? Perhaps the New York Comicon.

4. When will we see the first covers from Michael Turner? And maybe more covers from Joe Mad?

Thanks for your time.

Hi Joe, happy New Year!

I'm digging the new "Giant Size" books that you're putting out (though I wish we'd see longer original stories mixed in with the great reprints that the books have). Any plans for a new Giant Size Fantastic Four? I'm currently trying to track down the first seven issues (I think there were seven) of the original series, and it'd be great to see number eight one of these days.

You've mentioned that were two big genies you wanted to book back in the bottle. The first was that you felt that were too many mutants. The second is becoming more and more obvious is the mariage of Peter & Mary Jane (The most recent clue being the comment There are some like Spider-Man that I believe do get harmed on a STORY LEVEL, by marriage. . My questions are thus:1) When are you going to pull the trigger on that one. Given that Marvel now has a writer capable of writing a good book about a young married couple (Peter David on FNSM), it be nice if you just get it over with rather than letting him build it up just for you to "Decimate" the concept. and 2) With an unmarried Peter in the Ultimate line, why make the mainstream one the same (the same question could be asked about the mutant "problem").

Will we ever see a clear decision what team Wolverine is on?

I know he has always been running around on three different X-Books, ludicrous as it may have been. But he's an Avenger now as well, in addition to several mini-series he's featuring in.

Marve's currently making this fantastic effort at pulling its Universe together. Big things are happening, and they happen in a unified world. It certainly makes for a incredibly dense reading experience.

However, the closer the stories are related, the more do characters featured prominently in several books stand out. There's been a parody a while back about two of the X-Teams meeting, with Wolverine on either sides, staring at each other. Especially in light of increasingly interlocking story-telling, it's a bigger issue than ever before.

So, is there any chance we won't have Emma Frost tell Wolverine she can't help his personal quest in Wolverine because she's concentrating on finding Xavier while Wolverine is seen helping her in just that mission in Deadly Genesis at the same time?
It's just one example, but I think it makes its point.

Thank you!

Patrick

Dear Mr. Quesada,

in one of these column you mentioned that something you're especially proud of is the number of new writers that have made it to Marvel under your reign. As far as I can remember you specifically stated that quite a number of people were hired who had never written a comic book before.

How do these people get past the first hurdle?
I know I tried, and I'm kind of treasuring the "Unfortunately, I'm afraid we must decline the opportunity to read your work"-letter with your signature underneith, but I'd really like to know how these decisions are made. I'm not complaining, I'm just wondering. After all, isn't it a contradiction to say you're looking for fresh talents, but then not even look at the stuff people are willing to submit?

Respectfully
Patrick
